Planning & Enjoying Thanksgiving - Here is My Bible!

Here are some Friendsgiving and Thanksgiving Ideas that will make your celebration both fun and memorable, no matter how casual or fancy you choose to make it. With a few tips and tricks, you can keep things stress-free while making the day enjoyable for everyone.
1. Plan the Menu Together
Menu planning is an essential first step! It used to be my solo job, but now that my kids are adults, they love joining in. Here's how we make it easy for everyone:
- Group Chat for Ideas: We use a group chat (or the Apple Notes app) to send out a list and ask everyone if they have a special dish they’d like to bring. This keeps things organized and ensures that everyone’s favorite foods are included.
- Use a Shared Document: If you're using Notes or a similar app, it's a great way to collaborate and avoid duplicating dishes. If some guests aren’t tech-savvy, a quick phone call or message works just as well.
2. Shop and Prep in Advance
- Make the Food List: Write down everything you need for your meal and be sure to order or pick up your turkey early!
- Plan Shopping Day: Plan a day for shopping (if you haven’t already done this). The more organized you are, the easier your prep will be. Plus avoid the crowds!
- Prep Ahead of Time: Anything that can be made the day before (cranberry sauce, hors d'oeuvres, and pies) can be done.. This will make your Thanksgiving morning much less chaotic. And ask your guests to bring their dishes pre-made (at the very least assembled ) and hopefully in an electric pan that will keep them warm till served, otherwise there is too much mayhem in the kitchen surrounding getting the turkey, dressing and gravy made.
- Get a Storage Plan for Leftovers: Have containers ready to send everyone home with leftovers, or, if necessary, for your own fridge.
3. Table Decor
For me, the table setup is one of the most fun parts! Here are some ideas to help you create a beautiful and functional setting:
- Set the Table Early: Set the table a couple of days ahead of time. This gives you time to make sure everything looks just right without the rush.
- Table Covering: Whether you use a tablecloth, a runner, or no covering at all is totally up to you. Some tables are so beautiful you don't want to cover them, but adding a seasonal touch with a runner or placemats can still bring some charm.
- The Buffet Setup: If you’re going for buffet style, I like to set up the buffet area in advance. Start with plates at the end, followed by silverware and napkins on the table. Arrange the dishes in the order they’ll be eaten (salad, soup, turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, veggies, and condiments). I always make sure to label each dish, either with a recipe card or a post-it note for easy identification.
I realize that acquiring beautiful dishes like these can be a big expenditure or take some time to acquire. Buy one a year or put it on your birthday list, etc. Before you know it you will have a lovely set of serving dishes that will last you forever. That's my goal.
4. Make Room & Clean the House
Cleaning may not be the most glamorous task, but it's necessary for a smooth gathering:
- Clear Space in the Fridge: Clean out your fridge to make room for everyone’s dishes.
- Parking: If your house doesn’t have enough parking, park your cars elsewhere to make room for guests.
- Empty Garbage & Recycle: Make sure the trash cans are empty and recycle bins are clear so you’re not rushing to empty them in the middle of dinner. Extra TP in the bathroom
- Some guests prefer drying their hands on a paper guest towel so try and have a few of those on hand.
5. Drinks Area
- Separate Drink Station: I like to have a separate drink station away from the kitchen where guests can help themselves. Good dinner wines with turkey are Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, and Zinfandel Please be sensitive to those who don't drink and offer as many non alcoholic options. Modern Glam suggested this one, Non Alcoholic Spicy Pear Punch that sounds delicious and we are trying it this year.
6. Final Tips
- The Day Before: Make sure everything is prepped in advance (except for the turkey). It’s easier to handle pie-baking and salad prep the day before, so you’re not rushed on Thanksgiving morning.
- Leftovers: Boxing up leftovers at the end of the night can be a fun way to share the love with guests. Have a plan to send everyone home with a little piece of the meal!
With these simple tips, your Thanksgiving or Friendsgiving should go off without a hitch, whether you're serving dinner at a fancy table or just gathering around in a casual setting. It's the prep and planning that makes the day easier and gives everyone more time to enjoy the fun part: being together!
